Banksy pictures – from the streets of this world to your home

Banksy is probably the most famous graffiti artist in the world. His name is also known outside the street art scene. Even journalists report on his works and actions. The British artist has left his works all over the world – that much is known. House walls, walls and bridges are his canvas. The street artist has even made it into museums – not always by invitation. However, who is behind the name Banksy is still a mystery.

Banksy murals are mostly found in public spaces and are therefore aimed at everyone who passes by. The artist usually avoids words in his works. This means that his motifs are understandable in all countries and he excludes no one. He addresses social and political issues in his work. The artist is known for his stencil graffiti. With us, you have the opportunity to buy various of these Banksy pictures. If the artist appeals to you with his motifs, just browse through our range.

Stencil graffiti – who, how, why?

Banksy did not invent stencil graffiti. Amsterdam punks were already using this form of graffito in the late 1970s. French artist Blek le Rat made stencil graffiti famous in the 1980s and is considered the father of this art form.

The stencils are usually made of cardboard or laminated paper, which takes a long time to cut out with a cutter or scalpel. With the finished stencil, the motif in question can be reproduced quickly and often. In addition, it is easier to spray detailed motifs than it is to spray freehand. Multi-coloured stencil graffiti require additional effort – both in the production of the stencil and during spraying. Each colour requires a separate stencil. Precise work is required during spraying so that the different colours do not ‘slip’. Many Banksy pictures belong to the multi-coloured stencil graffiti.

Banksy – his works

Banksy is thought to come from Bristol in England and was probably born in 1974. In the early 1990s, he sprayed freehand. When a policeman surprised him while he was spraying, he hid under a garbage truck. He noticed the stencilled serial number of the vehicle. This gave him the idea of using stencils for his pictures. This way of working meant that he needed much less time to create a picture. This reduced the risk of being caught.

From 2000 onwards, various Banksy murals began to appear in London. This meant that the artist from Bristol had moved to the British capital. In the following years, the street artist expanded his sphere of influence: Germany, France, Spain, USA, Canada, Mexico. The British street artist has even left a picture on the border wall between Israel and the West Bank. Most of Banksy's pictures are created illegally. For this reason, many of his stencil graffiti have ‘disappeared’. Despite his worldwide success, some homeowners consider his pictures to be vandalism and have them removed.

From 2002, the motif ‘Ballon Girl’ or ‘Girl with the red ballon’ appeared as a series in public spaces in London. A year later, the artist sold signed prints of the motif. ‘Girl with a balloon’ is probably the artist's most famous motif. In 2018, Sotheby's London auctioned a framed version of the picture for over a million pounds. After the auction ended, the picture automatically destroyed itself: a shredder was hidden in the frame, which cut half of the picture into narrow strips. The destruction operation says a lot about Banksy's attitude towards the established art business. With his graffiti, he criticises wars, the affluent society and social conditions. You can get high-quality reproductions of well-known Banksy images from us. Even if his images fade or disappear in the streets, his motifs live on in your home. In addition to all the criticism, his graffiti is often characterised by a poetic melancholy: there is a little girl reaching out for a balloon flying away. The red balloon is shaped like a heart.

Banksy pictures – the different image carriers and formats

We print Banksy images on a variety of materials. For example, we offer Banksy images on canvas as well as on aluminium dibond. You can even get Banksy images as wall murals from us. This way, you can choose the type of material that best suits the place in your home where you want to hang the motif.

For example, a picture in the form of a splash guard is ideal for the kitchen: a poster or canvas would get dirty under certain circumstances. High-quality aluminium dibond pictures look modern and elegant. Due to the brushed surface with, for example, a silver effect, they are an eye-catcher in every living room. In contrast, a canvas picture looks classic.

If you want to stray from the rectangular picture format, we also have round and hexagonal Banksy pictures. These variants are made of veneer or aluminium dibond. It can also be done without a frame or picture border: a wall mural comes very close to the real graffiti, as the motif is immovably on the wall. This makes Banksy pictures as wallpaper particularly stylish.

Find the right size and tools for hanging

Are you interested in buying a picture but not sure which size is best for your wall? Check the sizes in which we offer the respective picture. Cut out a rectangle from newspaper, for example, measuring 50 x 60 cm. Stick the paper with adhesive tape to the place where you want your poster to hang. You can quickly see whether the size is right. If the paper looks lost, a larger format is better. So cut out a piece of paper in the next larger format (60 x 80 cm). Again, stick it to the place where you want your picture to hang later. Just try out different formats in this way. This will give you a feel for the appropriate size.

We offer matching accessories for hanging each of the different types of picture. With the help of mouldings or clamps, you can hang your poster without damaging it. Alternatively, you can order the matching picture frame directly when you buy Banksy pictures from us. You can attach aluminium dibond pictures using special spacers. To hang canvases, we offer picture rails that you can place on the wall or the clever adhesive nails. With our accessories, you can mount Banksy wall art professionally and securely.
