Pierre Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) was probably the most famous flower painter and was also known as the Flower Raphael. Early on, he studied the works of other masters and learned from famous draughtsmen and botanists. He was court painter to Queen Marie-Antoinette and Empress Josephine. Despite his fame, the scientifically accurate depiction of flowers was more important to him than artistic flower painting.
The still life shows a bouquet of peonies with magnificent blossoms. Depending on the weather, peonies bloom as early as the beginning of May. In cooler climates, the flowers open at the end of May or beginning of June. The flowers are present well into June.
