Detailed plant illustration to put on display
Mary Vaux Walcott was an American artist and naturalist. In her youth, she spent every summer with her family in the Canadian Rocky Mountains, where she became a true nature lover, photographer and mountaineer. Her passion for botanical paintings began with a drawing of a rare arnica flower. In 1925, a selection of her works was published by the Smithsonian Institution in a five-volume edition entitled "North American Wild Flowers". In her honor, a mountain, "Mount Mary Vaux" in Jasper National Park in Canada, was named after her.
This watercolor painting shows a magnificent mock camellia (Virginia Stewartia) made by Walcott in August 1925. It hangs in the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington D.C.
