August Macke - a painter with stylistic diversity
Born in 1887 in Hochsauerland, August Macke was always open to the diverse artistic styles and trends of his time. In his works, he experimented with new and recurring painting styles and art mediations. Thus, despite the relatively short, intensive creative period of around ten years, his repertoire shows a constant stylistic change due to changing external influences. His paintings are characterised above all by a certain dreamlike forlornness in the form of visions of paradise. The mood of the paintings and the faces of the protagonists in them reflect this either very clearly or subtly hinted at.
In his early work, Macke orientated himself primarily on his observed environment, which is expressed in numerous completed portraits. A trip to France around 1907 and his first encounter with representatives and works of French Impressionism brought about a boost and a reversal in his artistic work. His personal development now turned away from the motif and towards a purely pictorial effect, whereby he was particularly fascinated by the interplay of light and colour. For a time, he used the typical Impressionist variant of small and blurred brushstrokes.
The Impressionist influence had a particular impact on his preferred choice of motifs, which were reflected in everyday depictions such as his own domestic surroundings, gardens, landscapes and animals in the zoo. Soon afterwards, he changed and modified his painting style again, also referring to German Expressionists such as Franz Marc.
Now his pictorial composition showed an incredibly bright colourfulness with simplified forms, which were mostly outlined with dark lines. Numerous still lifes bore witness to the French influence, while Macke also experimented with a kind of abstract painting style.
In 1912, he changed his style again and orientated himself towards the influences of Futurism. The closed picture plane had disappeared and a dark colour scheme dominated his work. Prismatic elements overlap and intersect. Macke never felt that he fully belonged to a particular art movement, but rather took the elements that seemed positive to him from them and developed his very own personal and unmistakable style from them.
The overriding point of reference in many of his paintings is a certain lack of movement - the people depicted are turned away from the viewer, mostly keeping their heads lowered and their eyes mediatively closed. There is usually something imaginative and dreamlike about his paintings. They show and reveal Macke's dream and vision of a paradisiacally perfected world.
